Friday News for Week of November 25-27

This week in 1st grade:

Reading Strategy: Use your senses! When you read a book, use your 5 senses: hear the story, smell the story, taste the story, see the story, feel the story in your head!

Writing Strategy: Dialogue. Can you write a story where the characters are talking?

Math: We continue to study measurement. We are using a 6 inch ruler to measure things around our room. We also learned about estimation. We guessed before we measured.

Bible: We are continuing to study about the amazing life of Moses. We learned about the 10 plagues that God sent to the Egyptians because Pharaoh did not let the Israelites go free. We also heard the miraculous story of when God parted the waters of the Red Sea so the Israelites could cross on dry ground.

Friday News and Information for November 18-22

  • Happy Saturday! I’m sorry that this is being sent on Saturday not Friday. Last night, I was working really hard on the Friday news and it was nice and beautiful and then it DISAPPEARED and I lost it!!! Ahhhh so I didn’t have the energy to do it again, so now it is Saturday and I am doing it!

This week in 1st grade:

Bible: We have been learning about the life of Moses. We are excited to see how God is going to use Moses to save the Israelites from Egypt.

Reading: Since the students absolutely are enjoying the Pigeon books by Mo Willems, one of the moms offered to check out more of his books from another library. So now our classroom has 25 Mo Willems books! We are having a blast reading them. Together as a class we have discovered that Mo Willems books all share similar characteristics:

  • Talking bubble or thinking bubbles for the dialogue.
  • Squiggly line when angry or mad
  • BIG LETTERS when shouting and small letters when embarrassed.
We are excited to see what else we will find out about the Mo Willems books!

Here is an example of one of his book:

Math: We have started a unit on measurement. We started out talking about measuring temperature with a thermometer. On Friday we used our body to measure different things around the room such as using our finger, our feet, our arms to measure our desk, the whiteboard etc.

Upcoming Information

November 23 - PTA Christmas Fair. Come out and enjoy some local Yomitan crafts and yummy sweet from the PTF. 10am-2pm in the gym.

(If you child does not want turkey, then you can still send a home lunch) この日に全生徒は給食をたべれます。七面鳥と野菜です。

Portrait Photos

Hello everyone,

To everyone who ordered Portrait Photos, most of them were sent home today. They all look beautiful and handsome!

Some things to remember:

If you want a re-take (やり直し), save the photos in the package until re-take day and then bring them to the photographer on re-take day. DO NOT use or cut the photos, throw them away, give them back to the teacher, or give them back to the office.

Also, if you haven't done so already, please try to keep a change of clothes (着替え)in your child backpack. If it is too heavy, I can store it in the classroom. We have had a few incidents of students who have had "accidents" before they went to the bathroom. Also, please remember that the office does have some change of clothes, but they do not have underwear. So even if it is just underwear, please keep it in their backpack, or send it to school and I will keep it.

Have a wonderful Thursday night!

Sweet Potato Digging

Well… we TRIED going Sweet Potato Digging today, but it rained on us…

We all wanted to go sooooooo badly so we all got on the buses, and rode to the field. Some classes were already there and they had begun digging, but as soon as we were walking onto the field, it started pouring rain! So we all had to turn around and go back home. We were very wet, but we all changed into dry clothes and turned the heater on in the room and warmed up. (If your child is wearing some clothes from school, please wash them and return them back to school later. Thank you) We enjoyed a yummy warm lunch and stayed inside for the rest of the afternoon.

Everyone did get to bring some potatoes home to eat!! Enjoy them!!!

Friday News and Info for Nov 12-15

What a fun week in first grade!

This week we read two very very funny books together. Both written by Mo Willems titled, "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late" and "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus."

The students have enjoyed these stories so much that they began writing their own stories about the pigeon and drawing the pigeon. We are also planning on making a class movie from this character, but that's still a secret… (shhhh) :)

We also finished the story of Joseph! What a neat story! I really enjoyed teaching it to this class as they sat on the edge of their seat until the end of the story. We clearly saw how God was with Joseph every time in his life, and how God is with us too!

In Math we finished unit 3 with a test. We have covered telling time to the half hour, counting dimes nickels and pennies, skip counting by 2's and 5's and well as identifying patterns.

Walkathon:
This Saturday is the Walkathon!! If you have registered to walk here are some good reminders. Please arrive at school between 8:00-8:30 so you can be checked in and ready to walk by 9am. For K-2 walkers, if you think they are unable to walk the whole 17km, you can choose to take a school bus from OCSI to Zampa and then walk back to school. This way, the student can still get enough stamps AND cross the finish line to get their prize. If you think they can walk the whole 17km, they are welcome to but it they are unable to complete all the checkpoints, they will not get a prize at the finish line.

It would be a good idea to bring a water bottle, hat, a rain coat just in case, a towel, some snacks, and anything else you think they will need on the way.

I will be waiting for you at the finish line where everyone is invited to celebrate with a Finish Line Fun Festival with games. It will be a lot of fun! Looking forward to seeing you there!

Student of the Week:
We would like to start a new fun bulletin board titled, "Student of the Week!" I started it this week with my own spotlight. I decorated a paper and added some pictures. Each student who does this will also get to Show and Tell their spotlight and pictures with their classmates on the following Friday. This week, I gave it to Luka. I'm excited to see what he'll bring back!

Here is the example of mine.

Scholastic Book Orders

Last Friday, your child received a book order form from Scholastic. This is a world-wide book ordering company. If you would like to order some books from the catalogue, please follow the instructions. It would be a good opportunity for Christmas presents. The more books that get ordered, the more I as the teacher am able to get free books for my students as well.

1. Fill out the back of your order form by writing the quantity next to the book. On the bottom of the form, please write the total quantity of books and the total cost. (Please make sure you are NOT calculating the British £ sign. Please use the $)

I can only accept money in American dollars (no ¥). If you do not have dollars, please exchange some at a nearby exchange place. If you would like to write a check, please make it out to OCSI.

2. Turn the order form and the money into Ms. Turner.

All done! So easy! I will order the books and turn in the money and we should receive them back in a few days.

This months Scholastic order form and money need to be turned in by Friday, November 15th.

If you have any questions please ask me anytime!
