Friday News for Week of September 23-26

This week:

We would like to recognize a new student! Welcome to OCSI, Grace! Our class total is now 19! :)

This week was a short week, but packed full of exciting learning!

Reading:
Read to someone: We have continued to gain stamina with Read to Someone and the students are doing great! They learned that if their partner gets stuck, they can ask, “Do you need coaching or time?” to help their partner out.

Author and Illustrator: We learned that every story has an author and illustrator. Sometimes it is the same person who does both. Ms. Turner read a story that she wrote when she was in 4th grade! For that story, Ms. Turner was the author and illustrator! The students can all be authors and illustrators when they write and draw stories.

Prediction: We briefly talked about making predictions. We learned that while reading a story, we need to make a prediction, or a guess to what might happen next.

Writing:
Good writers use upper and lower case letters appropriately.
Good writers go back and work on their older stories.
The students also love to share their writing at Author's Chair! The students listening have great questions to ask the Author.

Math:
This week jumped into learning about nickels! We learned that nickels are worth 5 cents. If we have 5 pennies, we can trade it for a nickel. We also continued to practice counting by 5’s so we can get better at counting nickels and pennies.

Bible: We went all the way back to the creation story to give a review as well as to show Grace all the stories we have learned so far. We continued with the story of Jacob having a dream where God spoke to him. God said that he would never leave Jacob - and His promise is still true for us today! God will always be with us.

Chapel: In Chapel Mrs. Godoy taught about the story of when the little children tried to come to Jesus. The disciples tried to push the children away, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” Jesus loves children of all ages and wants them to come to Him!

FIELD TRIP!
Wow! What fun in the sun!
Here are some pictures and video from the field trip today!

Next Week:

Spelling: in is it did big him rip fix was of

Bible: (again) "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." Psalm 19:14

Upcoming Events:

September 30 - School Picture day!
October 13 - No School Teacher Development Day

Every child will have their picture taken, but if you want to order pictures, the picture form was sent home today. Check which group you want and put the money in and send it back to school. 写真の日は9月30日です。汚れたくない服を着させたければ、着替えを持たせてください。写真を注文したければ、フォルダーに入っている紙とお金を学校までかえしてください。

Friday News for September 15-19

Happy Friday!

This Week:

Reading:
Titles: This week we learned all about Titles. We learned that titles have a capital letter on every word or sometimes all the letters are capitals. We found the titles of the books we had been reading.
Stretch it out: We also learned a reading strategy to stretch out the words. Like a rubber band, if there is a word we don’t know, we need to try to stretch it out to see if we can sound out the words. We practiced with out own books!
Read to Someone: We also have begun practicing “Read to Someone.” When we read together, we do rock, paper, scissors to figure out who’s books to read, then we can take turns reading or read at the same time. I’m excited to start doing it more next week!

Writing:
Good writers use spaces between their words.
Good writers use one idea to write about.

Math:

  • We learned that when we are counting anything, we need to use units. Unites are important in telling us what kind of thing we are counting.
  • We also learned how to tell time to the hour this week. When the big hand’s at the top, the time is _____ o’clock.
  • Today, we also learned pennies! We learned that Abraham Lincoln is on the penny and when we count pennies we use cents. Cents means one part of 100! Because 100 pennies equals a dollar.

Bible: We had an exciting week of Bible stories! We learned that God is a holy God and that he cannot be near sin - and he can be a little scary at times, such as when he destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah but we also know that God is loving and kind when he rescued Lot and his family. We also learned how God kept his promise through the story of Abraham and Sarah with their son Isaac. Isaac also got married to Rebecah and they had Esau and Jacob. So many interesting stories! You can find these stories in the book of Genesis in the Bible.

Sorry, only a few pictures this week!

Homework for tonight

I'm sorry that I did not have a description for the math homework for tonight.

The students need to find all the sums of 10:

1+9 2+8 3+7 4+6 5+5 6+4 7+3 8+2 9+1 and color in all of those boxes (with pencil is ok). When they are finished colouring in all of those numbers, a hidden message will pop up. They need to write that hidden message on the line beside.

If they don't understand, that's ok, we can finish it tomorrow in class.

Sorry for the confusion!

Also, don't forget LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE TOMORROW!!!!

Mistake on the Bible Verse

Ooops!! I made a typo on the Bible verse!

Here is the correct one!

Bible Memory:  "Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever." Psalm 23:6

*instead of with, it should be will.

Sorry!!! :)

Homework Checklist and information for the week!

New this week:

Reading - Please have your child read with you, or by themselves for at least 10 minutes every night. They can read the library book they checked out, or they can borrow books from my classroom library. Please let me or your child know, if you want them to check out extra books.

Mathletics: I have updated the Mathletics program to be more suitable for the 1st grade students - I'm sorry that the last one was too hard… If you would like, your child can play at home. Please email me if you would like your child's username and password.

Friday News for week of September 8-12

Wow! What a fantastic week in 1st grade. We had 5 whole days of fun and learning!

This week:

Reading: We continued to gain stamina and made it to 10 minutes of independent reading where we stayed in one spot, read quietly, read the whole time, and started reading right away. Next week I will introduce “Read to Someone” where the student will partner read.
We also learned about characters this week! Every story has a character and we learned how to find them in our stories.
We also learned to Check for Understanding. While we are reading a book, we need to stop throughout the book to make sure we are understanding what to read. This week we read Skippyjon Jones, and When Sophie Gets Really Angry.

Math: We learned the sums of 10 this week! We first used our fingers to figure out ___+___=10! Then we did a few other games and worksheets to get the concept down. Good job 1st graders! This is the 10 cup game!

Writing: This week introduced sentences: A Sentence is a complete message that must start with a capital letter and end with a period. We also continued to practice Writer’s Workshop where the students write and share their writings.

Bible: We started the story of Abraham this week! Abraham was asked by God to leave his hometown and go to ... who knows where? Abraham is trusting God all along the way. God even promised old Abraham that he would have a son! God always keeps his promises no matter what and His timing is perfect!

Chapel: This week chapel was a recap of the Creation story. We also sang some of our favorite worship songs. You can hear them here!

Friday News for September 2-5

Happy Friday! Here is a recap of our week:

Reading: We started practicing for “Read to self” and gaining stamina! This week, we made it all the way to 7 minutes of quiet, constant reading. I am so proud of them! Our goal is 20 minutes so we will continue to gain stamina next week. This week we also finished some beginning of the year assessments, as well as took our first AR book quizzes from our library books.

Look at those quiet readers!!

Math: We finished the first introductory unit of math. This included before and after numbers, tally, skip counting, and learning some fun math games! Today was the first math test and all the students did great!

Social Studies: We are starting a unit called “Me on the Map.” We first looked at the spectacular world that God made: Earth. We learned about all the languages, countries, and people that live on earth. Next week we will start to look at Asia and Japan and narrow into Okinawa.

Chapel: This week at chapel, we learned the story of King Josiah who became at only 8 years old! He asked the people to clean out the temple and they found the Holy scriptures - God’s word! We learned that God’s word - the Bible is a “light onto my feet and a lamp unto my path.”

Bible: This week we learned the story of Noah’s Arc as well as the tower of Babel.

Next Week:

If you have not done so yet, please be sure to return the Toguchi Beach Field Trip permission form, family information sheet, and Friendship Friday T-shirt form.
