Friday News for week of February 3-7

It is getting warmer and warmer outside! Feels like summer is coming already. My first graders are like busy bees as we learn more in more.

This week:

Reading: We read the story called, "Did You See Chip?" It was actually a play. On Thursday, we practiced the plays in groups and then performed them! The students did a great job. They used props and were acting like they were in a real show. So much fun!

Bible: We started learning about the Judges. We learned about Othniel, Gideon, and Samson.

Math: We are finishing up Unit 5 with learning about probability with dice, turn around facts, and patterns in the facts. We also learned something fun today called the function machine.
If you say that the rule is +2, then you figure out what goes in and out. So if 4 goes in, 6 comes out, etc.

Writing: We are continuing to write procedural writing. The students are getting better and better! We learned how to write transitions words such as first, next, last, and first, second, third.

This week:

Reading/ Science: We read the story I am a Butterfly. We predicted what would happen at each stage of the butterfly's life. Then we watched some videos on the metamorphosis of the butterfly and correctly labeled the life cycle of a butterfly!

Friday News for week of January 21st - 24th

Hello everyone! We had another great full week of 1st grade. I apologise for my lack of communication to you this week. I may have overcommitted myself this month to many after school things, but I am trying my hardest to keep your children and teaching as my first priority.

This last week:

Chapel - We had a mission team from Korea come to our chapel this week. They performed Tae Kwon Doe, traditional fan dance, and some K-pop dances. They also shared some skits with us and shared with us how much Jesus loves us. It was a lot of fun!

Math - We learned greater than and less then… well… the students know it as Ally the Alligator. Ally loves to eat bigger numbers so when there is two numbers, she always chooses the bigger one. When two numbers are the same, she can't eat them and instead puts her arms above her face like =. We even sang a song to go with it. We also collected many alligators to display.

Kite Day - Today was Kite Day and it was BEAUTIFUL weather!!! Many of the kites were soaring high above in the sky. Some kites never made it up, but the students had fun running around and enjoying the beautiful weather.

Spelling Bee: This week was our class spelling bee… AND we have our top 3 winners!! Shuhei Miyairi, Lisa Sawada, and Luka Shen will represent 1.2 in the lower elementary spelling bee in February. Good luck!

Reading: This week we read the story Space Pup. We imagined what it would be like to be a super hero and thought about the character of Space Pup / Gus the Pup.

Bible: We learned about the death of Moses, and then how Joshua took command of the Israelites. They finally reached Canaan, their promised land from God, and they took over the city of Jericho. We acted out the story by pretending our desks were Jericho, Rahab is inside, and the students were the priests walking around the walls and blowing on their trumpets and horns. The last time, the walls of Jericho came falling down!!! What a neat story!!

This week: (Jan21-24)

NO SCHOOL - Monday, January 20th. It is an American holiday Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

SPIRIT WEEK! This week in January, the whole school will get to gather to celebrate our school spirit, by dressing up in something different every day!

TUESDAY - Pajama Day (wear your pajamas to school!!!)
WEDNESDAY - Crazy hair, mismatch day (mismatched clothes and crazy hair!)
THURSDAY - Career day (dress up as a job, any job!)
FRIDAY - Red, black, and white day (anything with those colors)

It should be a lot of fun!!

Spelling Words: boy, boys, box, boxes, dog, dogs, tent, tents, about, how

Bible Memory: "Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

Have a great weekend!!

Friday News for Week of January 13-17

Happy New Year!

The students jumped right back into school, ready to learn and grow in 2014.

This week:

Spelling Bee - We practiced a lot for the Spelling Bee. We studied the words and we practiced them by writing them in rainbow colors, using macaroni, phonics cards, and even paint inside a zip locked bag. We even had a group of high school students come in on Thursday to help us learn our spelling words. I think we will be ready for the spelling bee next week.

Math - We learned about place value of the tens and ones this week. We learned that there is a ones place and a tens place and that we can show them by using the cubes and longs.

Bible - We have continued with the story of Moses. We learned about the 12 spies that went to Canaan to spy out the land, but 10 did not tell the truth; only 2, Caleb and Joshua did. Because of that, all the people had to wonder around the desert for 40 years before they can go home to their land.

Science - This week we studied ants! We collected some ants from outside, we read some books, and watched some videos on ants. We learned the life cycle of ants and the different body parts of the ants.

Next Week:

Monday, January 13th - KITE DAY! Parents are invited to come and fly kites with us. 10:15-11:00, we will be on the soccer field flying kites. You may send the kite to school with your child in the morning, or bring it with you. Please purchase a kite if you have not done so yet.

Friday, January 17th - Class Spelling Bee! 1.2 will be having our own class spelling bee to determine the top 3 winners who will go on to compete in the 1st and 2nd grade Spelling Bee. I'm sorry, but parents cannot attend this. Good luck to everyone!

Spelling Words: (review) puff, well, miss, will, back, pick, sock, duck, hand, went, fast, jump, long, hang, wink, ring, talk, fall, tall, your

Bible Memory: "As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15

Monday, January 20th - NO SCHOOL Martin Luther King Jr. Day
