Friday News and Information for Week of April 28-May2

This Week:

Reading: Our reading strategy was “Fables” or better known as “Fairy tales and folk tales.” We read some very familiar stories and tried to think of what is the moral - or something we can learn from the story. We read “The Tortoise and the Hare,” “The Three Little Pigs,” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” “The Little Red Hen,” and “The Fox and the Stork.” The students did a great job thinking about the morals from those stories!

Math: This week we focused on money. We added two digit numbers together for the purpose of buying from a store. We also talked about giving change and counting up to get the right change. I opened “Ms. T’s Store” and each student had to pick two things, tell me the total, pay with some money, and figure out the change. They did great!!!

Bible: We finished up the end of Jesus’ life on earth with the amazing story of the Resurrection on Monday and Jesus appearing to his disciples and finally his going back to heaven. It was amazing to hear that Jesus is coming back again someday, and in the mean time, he has given us a job to do - go and tell others about Jesus. That’s why I’m in Okinawa!

Today was also Field Day! We had SO much fun! Because it was raining, we were inside for the Field Day part. But we still got to do the 30 yard dash, changing game relay, long jump, high jump, and limbo. After that, we did inside bowling and ate lunch inside the classroom. After we ate, we went to the park and played for a long time! I’m sure all the first graders will sleep well tonight because I sure will!
Long Jump

Next Week:

FIELD TRIP - MAY 2nd

If you have not returned the field trip permission form yet, please do so by Monday. This week we will start learning about the different types of animals to get us excited for the zoo on Friday.

Friday News and Information for April 21-25

This week was the first week back after Spring Break! The students came back so excited to come to school! It made me excited to teach them even more!

This week:

REPORT CARDS went home today. Please take out all of the papers, sign the blue envelope, and return it back to school. Thank you!

Reading: Our strategy for reading was “Every story has a beginning, middle, and end.” We read stories and talked together about the beginning, middle, and end. Every student picked a book and found the beginning, middle, and end of their own book.

Writing: Our strategy was Big Bang Beginnings. We thought of fun sounds that can be used to catch the reader’s attention such as “Bang!” “Kaboom!” “Eek!” and “Splash!” The students did a great job using that in their stories.

Math: For Math we started Unit 8 which involved a review of money. We also learned about the dollar bill and started counting money in the dollars. We then extended our place value to the 100’s place!

Bible: This week for Bible, we spent the whole week on Jesus’ last days on earth and especially to prepare for Easter. It is the saddest story in the whole Bible, yet it is the story with the happiest ending. I can’t wait until Monday when I tell the students the greatest part of this whole story! I encourage everyone to find a church near them and attend church this Sunday, because it is Easter and a great celebration of our risen Savior!

Here are some videos to talk about Easter!

Science: For Science, we did a few experiments, one with cornstarch and water that didn’t really work and another with sprite and raisons called “Dancing Raisons.” All of these students are mini scientists!

For Chapel this week, we had a combined Chapel with K-5th grade students. The high school choir performed some songs their had been practicing about Easter. Here is a video clip of all the students singing one of the songs they learned in Music class.

Science Experiment

Today, we tried a little science experiment called Oobleck! It involves cornstarch, water, and a plate. By itself, the cornstarch is powder and the water is liquid. But when it gets mixed together, it creates an interesting substance where it is both solid and liquid at the same time.

I forgot to take pictures of the experiment but we failed in the making of Oobleck. I think I didn't use enough cornstarch. Instead, we just played with the watery cornstarch the whole time, which was fun. But, some of the cornstarch got on the students clothes. That's why they are coming home with white spots on their clothes… Sorry about that! It should wash out.

I hope tomorrow's science experiment works! :)
