Friday News for Week of November 24-25

Happy week before Thanksgiving!

Walkathon - Thank you so much for all the parents and students that came out for the Walkathon last Saturday! It was such a fun day! You all did a great job walking such far distances! Today we had our Walkathon Assembly and we got to cheer for the students who came in first and who won different awards.

This Week:

Reading: This week we talked about Summarizing. I pulled out my summarising glove which included characters, setting, beginning, middle, end, problem, and solutions. We even played a game where we passed it around and when the music stopped and who ever had it, had to tell me one of the parts of the Summarizing Glove.

We also read a story called Houses Around the World. Because our Bible verse had the word “house” in it, we read the story and tried to figure out the Main Idea and Details. On Wednesday and Thursday, 2.1 came to visit us! They helped us edit our writing. On Thursday, together with our 2.1 buddy, we designed our dream house. Thanks 2.1 for coming over to our class!

Math: This week we talked about Domino’s! We figured out that on the odd numbers, there is a dot in the middle, and in the even numbers there is not. We also figured out the two parts and how they equal the total on the domino.
Remember how last week we did Graphs? Here are the pictures from the graph centers we did!

Bible: We finished the story of Joshua. What a neat story! The Israelites can finally enter the Promise Land of Cannan and now they are completely trusting in God unlike the people before them! After conquoring the city of Jericho, they went on to conquer the whole land. When Joshua was about to die, he called all the people and gave them a very important choice. He said that there will be other gods and idols that will come up, so you need to choose who you will serve.
In class, we reenacted the Battle of Jericho in class! Here are some pictures. Do you see Rahab with the red chord in the middle of the city?

Christmas Program Practice: Is in full swing! Every day now we are in the gym with all of elementary practicing for the Christmas program. Are the students starting to sing the songs at home? They are all doing great!

Next Week and Upcoming Information:

  • NO SPELLING OR BIBLE MEMORY!
Harvest Day - On Tuesday, November 25th, is Harvest Day! This is a day for 1st and 2nd grade students to learn about the Thanksgiving story by doing songs, games, arts and crafts, etc. The students will be visiting all of the 1st and 2nd grade classrooms throughout the day.

PIE DAY! This day is also Pie Day! A few families have been asked to provide Pie. At 1pm we will all enjoy some yummy Pie. :)

November 26-28 Thanksgiving break - No SCHOOL!

Friday News for Week of November 10-14

Happy Friday! We had a very eventful day with a visit from 1.2! We got to take a Spelling Test with them and enjoy a video on our Bible story.

This Week:
Reading: This week we focused on Main Idea and Detail. We read a very interesting book called Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. What if our food fell from the sky??? The students did a great job picking out the main idea of the whole story and the details throughout the book. This week, we also had Mrs. Bezner come read to us. She read the book Arlene Sardine. After she left, we tried to find the Main Idea and Detail about that story as well.

Math: We have finished Unit 3 with a test today! The students have now learned how to count money up to dimes, how to read clocks to the half hour, how to skip count and figure out the pattern in a set of numbers. Way to go 1st graders! This week we did a mini unit on data and graphs. Here are some pictures of the students working hard on figuring out the information the graphs give!

Bible: This week we finished the unit on Moses. Moses had disobeyed God so he was not allowed to enter the Promise Land, but right before he died, God let him get a glimpse of Canaan by letting him climb up Mount Nebo. Moses put Joshua in command. Now 40 the 40 years have passed and it is almost time for the Israelites to enter Cannan. Joshua sends 2 spies to look at Jericho. The Israelites cross the Jordan river and head toward to city of Jericho.

Christmas Program Practice - We have started practicing! The students are doing a great job remembering the words and the actions. Starting next week, we will start to have more and more practices for the Christmas Program. Put it on your calendar for December 5th. It will be an amazing performance!

Friday News for Week of November 3-7

Happy Friday! Parents, thank you for coming to the Parent Observation today! I hope you got a little sneak peak into what we do in 1.1.

This Week:

Reading - Beginning, Middle, and End.
  • Every story has what we call a BME. This week, we read a few stories and tried to figure out what happened in the beginning, middle, and end. We tried it together one time and then the students drew pictures of the beginning, middle, and end.

Writing: We are working on where to put periods. :)

Math: We learned about DIMES this week! This is the third coin we have learned so far! A Dime is worth 10 cents and can be traded for nickels and pennies. The students are doing great with counting money!

Bible: We are almost finished with the story of Moses! The Israelites have been wondering in the desert a long time and you’d think they would be ready to enter their promised land, but when they get close, the don’t trust God and as a result, they have to wonder the desert for another 40 years... C’mon Israelites! When are you going to start trusting in God?

You can find the slip on the website, or ask me and I can send one home with your child. If you have ANY questions, PLEASE email me! :)

Scholastic Book Orders - Again today, the Scholastic Book Orders were went out. If you do not want to order anything, can you please return the paper back to school? I didn’t have enough for everyone in my class. Also, you can look at books online. You can order here online - http://world-schools.scholastic.co.uk/okinawa-christian-school-intl or you can turn in the paper and money. The deadline will be November 21st!

Parent Observation 参観日

DON'T FORGET! Tomorrow is Parent Observation! We would love to see you there!
A note from Mrs. Bezner~

Dear Parents,

Just a reminder that the OCSI Elementary department will host a parent observation time this Friday from 8:30 - 9:30 AM.

Please pay attention to the following procedures to help make the observations go smoothly:

1. Please park your car in the parking behind the school.

2. **There will be a sign in table located in the elementary breezeway. Parents MUST SIGN IN before going to any classes.**

3. On Friday mornings, some classes have specials from 8:50-9:20 At the sign in table you will be given a brief schedule indicating which classroom your child is in during the first hour of school.

4. Please enter the classroom and stand in the back.

5. Parents are welcome to visit any classes (including more than one grade level), even if your child is not in that class.

6. In order to ensure the most beneficial observation time for all parents and classes, please try to make private care arrangements for younger siblings who might have difficulty standing quietly during the observation time.
7. Please remember that this time is for observation only and is not a time for conference. Come and go from the classrooms as quietly as possible and avoid any extra distractions to the students and teachers.

8. The observation time will conclude at 9:30. If you are able, please step into the front office to fill out a brief feedback survey and take a look at the displays of elementary students' "Response to Literature" writing from K4 to 5th grade.

We are looking forward to having you join us for Parent Observation Time!
