Friday News and Upcoming Information!

Happy Friday! Christmas is in the air that it is hard to do any work, but we are continuing to learn a lot AND have fun in first grade!

This week:

Reading: This week we focused on two things “Making connections” and “Prior knowledge.” For “Making connections” we read the book Green Eggs and Ham and we thought if any part of that story connects to us. At first, I didn’t want to _______ but then I tried it and I liked it! We thought of some great things! For “Prior Knowledge” we read a book called The Berenstain Bears Down on the Farm. We wrote down everything we know about a farm first and then we read the book and added any details we figured out after reading the book.

Math: We are zooming through our math book with measurement this week! We used inches to measure. We also learned how to read a clock to the quarter hour. Phew that was difficult! A quarter to 8 o’clock … a quarter after 2 o’clock… the students are doing great though!! We will have an end of Unit 4 test next Wednesday!
This week we also did a centre rotations in 4 groups: measuring students’ heights, playing domino game, geoboard shapes, and base 10 blocks. Here are some pictures:

Writing: We started writing our own Acrostics this week! The students did AMAZING! Here are some examples:

Walks with no sound
Outside in the night
Lives in the forest
Fast as cheetah

Pink
In the mud
Grunts

Cold snow
Only snow is cold
Lot of times I slid
Drink hot cocoa

Music helps you sing well
Use piano to make a song
Some songs are hard
If you love music you will get better
Come and sing with us

Next week we will write a Christmas acrostic!

Today for Fun Friday we did Christmas Chalk outside!

Next Week:
Saturday, December 13th - tomorrow! Kaneko Koji Parent Seminar

Thursday, December 18th - Christmas Party NO Cafeteria Lunch , 12:30 Dismissal
Their party will take the place of their lunch, so they will need lots of goodies to make it a fun day. We would love for the parents to participate and send a food item to share with the entire class.

Some ideas are finger sandwiches, chicken nuggets, finger size foods, meatballs, cheese and crackers, fruit etc.

Be looking for an email soon to sign up for a food item to bring!

Spelling Bee:
During Christmas break, please study the Spelling Bee words with your child. Our classroom bee will take place the second week after returning from Christmas Break. The top 3 winners from my class will be able to participate in the 1st and 2nd grade bee later on in January.
