Friday News for January 26-31

Happy Friday! I hope everyone is doing well on this last school day of January!

This Week:
Reading: Our focus for the week was “Tune into Interesting Words.” We have been learning about adjectives all week and how they are so fun to use when describing a noun!

We also learned some different ones like these:

We also read aloud some fun book with lots of interesting words! Fancy Nancy and the Napping House.
Can you say plume, stupendous, and fuchsia??
the DOZING dog, the COMFY bed, the WAKEFUL flea

We wrote down other WOW words that we read or thought of throughout the week.

Math: We finished Unit 5! We learned about function machine and asked “What’s My Rule?” this week. It’s a fun way to think of addition and subtraction facts. We also learned about turn-around facts. We will learn more about that when we do fact families!

Bible: We learned all about Samuel and Saul this week! Samuel was chosen by God to be a judge for Israel. When the Israelites looked at their surrounding countries who all had kings, they wanted one too but they forgot that God was their king. “We want a king, we want a king!” So God let them have a king - Saul. Saul was good in the beginning but later began to disobey God’s directions. God said he would not make Saul king anymore. Next week, we will learn about the next king!

In one story, Samuel called all the people to come back to God. So all the Israelites were gathered at Mizpah when the mean Philistines heard that they were there and came to attack them. All the people prayed and right as the Philistines attacked, God sent thunder that sent them into confusion. When the Israelites won the battle, they set up a huge stone and they called it “Ebenezer” which means “God helped us.” So we made our own stones of Ebenezer!

Chapel: We had some special guest for chapel: the Covenant Players. They are actors who travel around doing play and sharing the Gospel. We got to watch 2 plays that both taught very important lessons.

Next Week:
Spelling Words (Review): boys boxes tent late rain may came boat hope told coat like time find kind seed meet meat weak week

Friday News and Upcoming Information

This Week:

Reading: This week we read a story called Did You See Chip. It is a reader’s theater with the different characters acting out the story. I assigned a character to each student and they got to practice that part - kind of like a part of a play! Today, the students performed it and they did so well! I will post the videos later in the week.

Math: We practiced solving number stories. We practiced comparison of stories such as who has more? who has less? Today, we had some fun with dice! We learned about turn around facts and played some games with finding the sum of the dice.

Bible: We are starting to learn about the story of Samuel. Hannah, his mother, prayed that she could have a baby and dedicated him to God’s service. Samuel grew up in the temple with Eli. Samuel will be used by God in amazing ways in the coming stories!

Chapel: This week we had a guest group of college students all the way from Korea to tell us about Jesus! They wowed us with traditional Korean dances, tae kwon dow, and a funny skit. The students all enjoyed it very much!

Spelling Bee: On Wednesday, we had our classroom spelling bee. I was so proud of everyone for studying so hard over the last few weeks! The students also did so well during the spelling bee. Our classroom winners, who will compete with the other first and second graders are:

Andy Qi
Daigo Yamada
Shanela Hannadige

and our alternate in case one of them is unable to compete will be Kai Yamaguchi!

GOOD JOB and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

This week we also celebrated Justin's birthday with a mini party! His parents came and read a book picked out by Justin and we also did a craft of decorating a kite. Happy birthday Justin and thanks for the birthday goodies!
