Friday News for week of April 20-24

Happy “Field Day” Friday!!

We had an amazing Field Day today! The students did great on all of the events, they cheered each other on, and had fun. Thanks to the parents who came out in cheered.

After Field Day, we headed to the park for a picnic lunch and play time. I'm sure the students will sleep well tonight :) I know I will!

This Week:

Reading: We are continuing our theme of Fairy Tales and read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We realized that it also has all the characteristics of a Fairy Tale. The students really enjoyed that story!

We took a lot of reading time this week to prepare for Kid City. We practiced what we need to say at each of the stations, as well as practicing filling out the forms at places like the City Hall, the Bank, and the Hospital.

We also have been preparing for Terra Nova test next week. We took a practice test yesterday to see how to fill in the bubble, as well as what kinds of questions. We learned that it is going to be VERY important to listen to Ms. Turner, because sometimes there is only pictures in the students book and I will read the question aloud. I know the students will do a great job next week!!

I sent the practice tests home yesterday. You can keep those and get an idea for the kind of test they are taking.

Our Spelling words this week were all R-controled vowel spelling words. This means that the “r” controls the vowel and takes its sound. I made lots of fun games for the students to practice the spelling words and they enjoyed playing them this week.

Math: Some more preparing for Terra Nova by thinking to count by adding and subtraction 10’s and 20’s. We also did a fun game with practicing word problems, where the students raced to answer the questions in groups.

Bible: We are continuing to read through the Children’s Bible. We have read to the story of Jesus dying on the cross and his being alive again. Wow! Jesus did such cool miracles. We really enjoyed the stories of Jesus. Next week we will go back to going through the Old Testament and continue on with Elijah and Elisha.

Post Card: Be waiting at the mail boxes next week! You might receive something special from your children! :)

Next Week:
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we will be taking the Terra Nova test. Please make sure that your child arrives to school on time, and try hard to not miss school on those three days. If your child misses a test, we cannot make it up. For these days, please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep on those nights. Please also send a nutritional snack with your child to school these days (cheese, crackers, fruit, senbei etc). We will have a snack time in the morning between tests.

Friday News for Week of April 14-17

Happy Friday! First week back from spring break and the students were SO excited to be back at school. They came with all of their energy and excitement sharing with me all of their activities from Spring Break.

This Week:
Reading: For our Read to Self and Read to Someone time, I introduced a new assignment in their Reading Journal. After their reading time, they have to answer some questions in their journal. This is my way of keeping track of the books they read and to see if they are understanding the different reading strategies.

We also started learning about Fairy Tales! We learned that fairy tales usually have a good opening (Once upon a time…) a good ending (and they all lived happily ever after), royalty (kings, princesses), love, good characters, bad characters, and special numbers or repeated phrases. We read the story of Rapunzel and found out that is has all of those! Wow! We are excited to keep reading more Fairy Tale stories next week.

Our spelling words this week were all from the -ar and -or families. We did an activity on Thursday where we tried to find as many words with the different word endings. The students found a lot!

Math: This week we finished Unit 8 of Math. We are continuing to learn about fractions with sharing groups of pennies equally. This will lead us into equivalent fractions later. We also are practicing with adding and subtraction by 10, as well as symmetry, and double digit addition and solving addition and subtraction problems. Wow, great job 1st graders!

Writing: This week we learned the different parts of writing a letter. We learned that you start with the Heading, Greeting, Body, Closing, and Signature. Next week we will practice writing a letter together!

Bible: This week we have been going through the Children’s Bible learning about all the stories of Jesus. We are reading some super cool miracles that Jesus did! Healing the sick people, making the blink man see, raising a girl from the dead, walking on the water!!! WOW! Jesus is so awesome!!

TONIGHT: Family Reading Night!! Come out at 6:30 for some fun and books! The teachers will be reading books and you can come with your family to do some activities together!

Next Week:
Spelling Words: hurt, verse, fern, dirt, burn, first, bird, turn, her girl, great, again, who

Thursday News for week of March 30-April 2nd

Happy beginning of spring break!!! I hope that everyone has a very fun and enjoyable spring break spending lots of time with family and friends.

This week was another short week, but another action packed week in first grade.

Reading: This week we continued learning about Folk Tales. We learned that Folk Tales are from every country in the world and they usually teach a lesson that we can learn. This week we read two Japanese Folk Tales: The Boys of the Three Year Nap and Momotaro. The students enjoyed both of those books and were able to find the problem and the solution in both of those stories,

Writing: We continued writing poetry this week. We wrote Question poems, Shape poems, and a love poem about chocolate! The students did amazing!

Math: We are getting into some hard concepts in math but the students are doing great! We learned how to make change this week using the American money. We played the money again, but this time, the students had to make change!

We also learned about fractions! Wow! I told the students that they will need to know how to use fractions all their life!

Bible: We finished the amazing story of Jesus’ last days on earth. We heard the heartbreaking story of his death on the cross, the amazing story of how he came back to life, and the hopeful story about how he return to heaven and will come back for us someday! WOW! What an amazing God who loves us SO much to send his son to die for us!

Reading Emphasis: This week the theme is Sports/Outdoor. Continue to send in your pictures! Next week during Spring Break, the theme will be Animals!
