Friday News for week of December 14-17

Merry Christmas everyone!!

We had a great last week of 2015 at OCSI:

In Bible, we finished up the story of Jesus’ birth and was reminded of the real reason he was born as a baby on earth - to grow up and die on the cross for our sins.

In Reading, the students figured out the beginning, middle, and end of a book of their choice.

In Word Work, the students tried to find as many words as they could out of the words “Merry Christmas”

During Spelling, we made an acrostic of the word “Christmas.”

In Math, we reviewed place value, time, and greater than less than.

…. AND on Thursday we had a class party!

Thanks to all the moms and dads that came out to the party. We had lots of fun together by playing some games, making a Christmas tree tape craft, and eating delicous foods together. It was a wonderful day!

I will miss you all over the break, but please enjoy lots of time with your families! I’m headed to Tokyo tomorrow to visit my parents and brothers. :)

We will see you back to school on January 5th!

Important Details over break:

SPELLING BEE:

In your child’s folder is a list of spelling bee words. After we get back to school in January, we will have a class spelling bee. The top 3 winners will get to compete in the 1st and 2nd grade spelling bee later on in February. Please study these words with your child over the break!

KITE DAY:

After we get back to school on Jan 11th is Kite Day - parents are welcome to come and enjoy flying kites with your child. It is a regular schools day and flying kites will only be an hour of the day. Make sure you have a kite!

Friday News for Week of December 7-11

This Week:

Reading: We learned that every story has a Beginning, Middle and an End. We said that it kind of looks like a roller coaster.
This week we read books like “When Sophie gets angry - really, really angry” and “Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up Her Wash.” We thought about what part came at the beginning, middle, and end. The students are really growing in their comprehension of stories!

Math: This week we:
  • Compiled data from our heights.
  • Reviewed telling time on clocks to the quarter hour by using :15, :30, :45
  • LEARNED PLACE VALUE! The students did great learning about the ones, tens, and hundreds place values. I hope this will help them in future maths when they grow up!

Playing a math digit game:

Bible: This week, we took a break from learning about the Israelites and jumped to the New Testament to learn about when Jesus was born on earth. I used 10 envelopes with 10 different pictures in it to tell the story. The students also received one envelope and decorated it for Christmas. After each day, when I show the students the picture for the day, they also get a smaller picture to keep in their envelope. Next week, they will have all the pictures and can use them to tell the Christmas story!

This week we has these 5 pictures:

It’s so amazing to think that the God who created the universe loved us enough to send his own son to earth, simply to die in our place - WOW!

Social Studies: We learned about the life cycle of a plant with some videos and a SCIENCE EXPERIMENT!!!!! We took a bean and placed it in a plastic baggie with a wet paper towel and taped it to the window. We are wondering, will it sprout??? Sure enough today it had sprouted!!!
Here’s some pictures:

Next Week:
Bible Memory: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14
NO SPELLING WORDS

Only 4 days of school!

Also, students are welcome to bring small gifts to hand out to their classmates. If your child chooses to participate, please ensure each student in the class receives one so that nobody feels left out. Giving gifts is just a fun gesture during the holidays, so please don't feel obligated, it is not mandatory.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday! Have a great weekend!

Friday News for week of November 30- December 4th

Happy Friday!

Did you all enjoy the Christmas Program? We all enjoyed singing and celebrating Christmas with you all! Here are some pictures of us back stage. Don’t they look beautiful!

Other than Christmas Program, we had a pretty normal week:

Reading: We continued to make connections between ourselves and the books we are reading

Spelling: We had 20 words for review this week. We did some centers to play some spelling games to help us in the test.

Math: This week, we became a MATH FACTS SUPERHERO! It is important for students to be quick in solving the addition and subtraction math facts. So we pretended we were math superheros and practiced solving addition and subtraction facts quickly.

Today for our fun Friday, we used chalk to draw outside. Some of our review words used words “alk” so I thought it would be fun to play with “chalk.”

NEXT WEEK:

Bible Memory: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11
Spelling Words: boy   boys  box   boxes  dog  dogs  tent  tents  about   how

December 17th - LAST DAY OF SCHOOL - No lunch served in the cafeteria. Early dismissal.
1.1 Christmas Party: Stay tuned for more information
