Friday News for Week of April 25-29

Happy Friday and Beautiful Field Day!!

The weather was perfect today for our Field Day! Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and families that came out to watch and cheer us on!

The students did so well in all the 10 activities. They cheered each other on and had good attitudes. After the events, we went down to the park for lunch and played, played, and played some more! I hope the students are not too sunburned! It was a great day!

This Week:

Reading: We focused on Cause and Effect. Every story or events in life have cause and effect. It’s a good skill to point it out. We practiced together throughout the week and read several books on Cause and Effect. The students also read their own books and thought of the cause and effect. Great job everyone!

Math: We took our Unit 8 test which means we only have 2 units left! We have continued practicing with fractions and counting on the number grid with 10’s and 1’s.

Bible: We took a break from the story of Solomon to learn about some different kinds of Psalms in the Bible. Psalms or kind of like prayers and we learned a Psalm of Confession, Adoration, Supplication, and Thanksgiving - those are big words for saying sorry to God, praising God, asking of God, and thanking God. We can also pray the same way!

Science - We started learning about the different animal groups this week. First, we learned the characteristics of a mammal and watched some videos from http://kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals

Friday News for Week of April 18-22

Happy Friday!

Our first week back after Spring Bread was fantastic! Can you believe we only have 7 weeks of school left??

This Week:

Reading: This week we went back through our Independent Reading time to make sure we were doing it correctly. We remembered all the rules for doing Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Book Shopping. The students did a great job with showing me that they know how to do it well and with good stamina.

Writing: This week, we started writing poetry. We started with a color poem and then went to -ing poem and a question poem. The students are doing a great job with those! We also read some funny poems from Jack Prelutsky.

Math: We started learning about fractions this week. Fractions are so hard to understand sometime, but the students did great!

Science: This week we learned about the three States of Matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We learned about the particles that make up matter. I also showed them some ice, water, and air and the students got to touch it and feel the different states of matter. On Friday, we put an ice cube in a bag and taped it to the window. The ice soon melted to water, and now we are waiting for it to turn into vapor as a gas. So much fun!

Friday News for Week of April 4-8

What a week! Happy beginning of spring break and end of a crazy week of Terra Nova Test and KID CITY!!

Thank you to all the parents who helped set up and run Kid City - we couldn’t have done it without you!

Kid City was a great success! The students did a great job practicing what it would be like to work at a real job and be a real customer.

The students also did great during Terra Nova Test this week. We had 8 tests in 1st grade and we did them over 2 days! Phew! Even I was getting tired of the test on Thursday, but the students all had good attitudes and did their best of the tests. After the tests, we had a fun filled afternoon. After every test, I popped a balloon that had a special fun activity. We got: extra recess, games, movie, science experiment, creation station, painting, and paper airplane challenge. Here’s some pictures:

Today starts the beginning of Spring Break. Please have a very fun filled time with your family and be safe where ever you may end up going.

I am going to Hungary for the week to visit my best friend from college!

See you on April 18th!
-Ms. Turner
