Friday News for Week of May 23-27

Sorry for the late Friday News. This week I hadn't been feeling very well and had to stay home on Friday with a bad cough and fever. I am resting a lot so I can hopefully be back to school on Tuesday.

This Week:
Reading: The students focused on making a connection to books as they read independently this week.

Writing: The students continued working on their animal research project and most of the students are on the last step of illustrating their animal.

Math: We are ending our math units with lots of review. We did a day of reviewing clocks as well as vending machine math where we added up 2 things from a vending machine and figured out the money and change.

Bible: We finished up the story of Esther and learned that God used a normal girl to save a whole group of people.

On Thursday, the 4th grade class came to read their homemade books to us. The 1st graders did a great job listening and can now look forward to when they can make their own books in 4th and 5th grade.

This week we also had a special guest helping us in 1st grade. One of the 5th graders, joined us for a few days and helped us out. He helped with reading, spelling, and some math as well as taught the 1st graders about samurai life in Japan.

Next Week:

Friday News for Week of May 16-20

Happy Friday!

This week in 1st Grade:

Writing - We started our animal research project. The students picked an animal, read some research, found the habitat, diet, description, and fun fact. They transferred the information to a graphic organizer and then transferred it to a template. Next week we will write our final draft. The students are doing a great job of learning what it means to do some research and writing down their information.

Math: We finished chapter 9 this week which means only the review Chapter 10 is left! We did a lot with fractions this week to make sure the students understood it.

Science: We finished up our unit on animals and I hope the students are able to pick out animals based on their class of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and birds.

In Bible, we learned the sad story of the exile of Israel where the Assyrians and Babylonians came to attack Israel and carried the people away. But from that sad story, comes the exciting stories of Daniel and Esther who still trusted in God even in the new land. We also can’t forget God’s promise to bring the people of Israel back after 70 years.

Opportunity to Raise Money for Kumamoto:

Today, a paper was sent home for donations for CRASH Japan, and organization that works after earthquakes and disasters around the world. If you would like to donate, please do.

In our classroom, we will also be collecting used, old paper - until the last day of school. June 10th, I will take the paper to a recycling place in Urasoe to exchange for money. I will then donate the money to Operation Safe - an organization started here in Japan after the Tohoku earthquake that works with children after a traumatic incident such as an earthquake. They do a VBS style event to give children, "help, hugs, and hope." For more info here's their website: http://opsafeintl.com/

If you would like to send some paper into school, please send it with your child!

We had a fantastic time at the Zoo today! Here’s some pictures:

This Week:

Then the students got to pick a partner and “interviewed” them to find out true information about them. Next week, the students will pick an animal and will write a Report on All About ______ (the animal they pick). Hopefully the students were on the look out today at the zoo about what kind of animal they want to write about.
