Friday News for Week of October 24-28

Sorry that this post is late again! I was feeling a little sick on Thursday and Friday but I’m much better now!

This week:

Reading: This week we looked at our Cafe Menu board and thought about the reading strategies we have learned so far. We reviewed strategies such as Check for Understanding and Use Beginning and Ending Sounds. We put them up on the board so the students can refer to it while they are reading to help deepen their reading ability.

 Playing a spelling game

Writing: We started a new unit on procedural writing. We will think through “How to… (do something).” The students will need to think through the steps and draw pictures that go with their steps. This week we thought through, “How to go to recess” and wrote it together.

Math: We are moving through subtraction. We learned how to subtract from 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 this week! I hope these facts will be engrained into the students minds so they can be so quick to do subtraction problems!

Bible: We started the exciting story of Joseph this week! Some crazy things happened to Joseph including being sold as a slave to Egypt and being thrown in prison when he didn’t do anything bad! But the whole time, God was with Joseph and has an amazing plan through Joseph’s life.

Science - This week we learned all about a life cycle of a pumpkin. We read some books, drew the lifecycle, and even watched a video on a time-lapse of a pumpkin growing.

Since this week was the beginning of 2nd quarter, we changed up the seating arrangement and initiated a new behavior management system. Everyday, the students may earn beads for good behavior and following directions. On Friday, we count up our beads and the students who have the most beads get to choose the Fun Friday activity first. The students this week earned a lot of beads and were good to follow directions.

Next Week:
Spelling Words: end   hand   sent   went   fast   must   jump   lamp   they   one
Bible Memory Verse:Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

Upcoming Events:
  • 11/12: Walkathon - It’s still not too late to sign up! If you’d like to join us on a fun day of walking and raising money for the school, send in ¥7000 and the blue permission slip. Remember, 1st graders have to walk with an adult!

Friday News for Week of October 11-14

Happy Friday!

We had another fun week at OCSI!

This Week:
Reading - We continued to focus on Mo Willems as an author and illustrator and we read the Elephant and Piggy books. There are SO many of them and they are SO funny! We also did lots of writing with Elephant and Piggy books. We wrote our own words in a speech bubble, and wrote our own stories and used speech bubbles in our stories. We finished up the books with “We are in A Book” where Elephant and Piggy actually talk to the reader! SO much fun!

Math: This week we continued through subtraction. We did a fun lesson on subtracting 0 and subtracting all like 4-4=0. I even challenged the students with 43-0= and 43-43= and they knew it! Great job students!

Bible: We learned the crazy story of how Jacob took his brother’s blessing. Esau was really mad! It’s crazy how God used this story as part of his plan to send a Savior through the story of Abraham, Isaac, and now Jacob. Here’s a fun video we watched to help tell the story.
God's Story: Jacob and Esau from Crossroads Kids' Club on Vimeo.

On Thursday we had our first all school assembly. We looked AWESOME in our orange T-shirts. We also learned about the Walkathon coming up on November 12th. Some information was sent home today about Walkathon, so please look over it and email me if you have any questions. It’s a little bit different this year - only 6 kilometer instead of 20 kilometer so I hope everyone can participate. It should be a very fun day!

Next Week:
Spelling Words: add puff egg well will doll kiss miss you live
Bible Memory Verse: “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; Come before him with joyful songs, know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us and we are his.” Psalm 100:1-3

  • 10/14 Math Night - 6:30-7:30
  • 10/21 - 1st Quarter Ends
  • 11/12: Walkathon
