Happy Friday!

This Week:
Reading - Retelling the story: We continued to practice retelling the story to others not forgetting the Title, Setting, Characters, Problem, Solution, Beginning, Middle, and End!

Math: Today we had a fun day of learning about polygons. We learned the rules for polygons and drew some polygons on our whiteboards. This week we also learned about shapes and graphs.

Bible: This week we learned the exciting story of David and Goliath. Goliath was a 9 foot giant from the Philistine army. We also tried beating Goliath with spoons and pompoms!

Friday News for Week of February 16-19

Happy Friday! We are moving fast through the school year! It’s almost March, unbelievable!

This Week:

Reading: We focused on Retelling the Story. This is a very hard but necessary skill. To retell a story, you need to know the setting, characters, problem, beginning, middle, end, and the solution. Phew! That’s a lot of things to remember! But, it will help the students with the comprehension of their stories.

This week we finally had everyone back after some sicknesses so we performed our Did You See Chip? Reader's Theater! Enjoy:
Did You See Chip 1 from Sarah Turner on Vimeo.
Did You See Chip 2 from Sarah Turner on Vimeo.
Did You See Chip 3 from Sarah Turner on Vimeo.

Math: This week we focused on counting quarters and telling time. Quarters are the hardest of all the coin money so we will continue to practice counting the coins. We also learned how to tell time to the 5 minutes by looking at the long and short hands.

Bible: We learned how Saul continued to disobey God and as a result, he is not able to be king anymore. Samuel goes and picks a new king from the family of Jesse. Samuel thought it was going to be one of Jesse’s older sons, but the Lord reminded him, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” As a result, Jesse’s youngest son, David was chosen who will go on to be a good king for Israel.

Writing: We wrote letters to our parents this week!

Social Studies: We learned all about restaurants this week! What is the favorite restaurant you like to go to with your family?

Friday News for Week of Feb 8-12

Happy Friday and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today was so very windy, but we tried not to blow away and had a fantastic day!

Today we celebrated Valentine’s Day by reading a fun Valentine’s Book, decorated Valentine Cards and passes out candy and cards to our friends.

This Week:

Reading: We focused on the Problem and the Solution of the story. The problem is the “oh no!” part of the story and the solutions is the “yeay” part of the story. We read some fun books to figure out the Problem and Solution.

For Spelling we practiced with some tricky words like meat and meet, weak and week.

Math: Today we finally learned about quarters. To me, quarters were always hard to count, even when I went to college in America, I had a tough time counting quarters. We will practice a lot next week and I’m sure the students will all be really good at counting quarters by the end! We also practiced some more function machine and money practice as well as some centers on fraction of blocks, geoboards and triangles, math facts practice, and fact family.

Bible: We are continuing to follow the Israelites with the story of Samuel’s birth. Now the Israelites have demanded a king and so Saul was anointed as the first kind of Israel.

Social Studies: We are starting to practice and learn about Kid City - a super fun event in April where the 1-2nd graders get to take of jobs and be producers and consumers in a mini city. We have learned about the Post Office, the Church, and the School.

Friday News for Week of February 1-5

Happy Friday!

What a great week we had at OCSI! Today was the lower elementary Spelling Bee! The three students in our class did so great! I am so proud of them! And congratulations to the three second graders who won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place!

We did lots of exciting fun things this week!

Reading:
Readers Theater: We read a story called “Did You See Chip?” about a dog who ran away and a sad girl who made friends while trying to find her dog. We then divided into three groups with a script and I assigned a part for each students. We practiced reading our part to get ready to perform our play next week! We will use props and practice fluency of reading with a Readers Theater. I will video tape it and make sure to put it up here later!

Writing: We also started letter writing. The students learned about the 5 different parts of a letter and together we wrote a letter to Mr. Jernberg asking for more fun things on the playground. The students will also start learning their address to get ready for Kid City.

Math: This week we learned about the centimeter. It’s interesting to think that there is 2 ways of measurement. The students walked around the room and measured different things they saw with a centimeter ruler.

Bible: We finished another Bible unit and this time with the story of Ruth and Naomi. Ruth was willing to leave her home to follow her mother-in-law and God blessed her for it by providing her food and protection in the field of Boaz. Later Boaz would marry Ruth and would both be in the family tree of King David as well as Jesus! Amazing!

On Thursday it was the 100th day in School! We did 100 exercises, wrote 100 Spelling Words, and made a 100's day book. Today for Fun Friday we did a science experiment where we guessed how much water would be 100 drops of water. The students really enjoyed it!

Next Week:
Spelling Words: be me we see seed  feel meat  meet weak week
Bible Memory Verse: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
