Friday News for the Week of April 24-28

Happy Field Day!!

What great weather we had today for field day!! The students got wet, ran hard, play a lot, and had fun! Thanks to the parents who came out and cheered for us! Here’s some pics:

This Week:

Reading: We focused on “Prior Knowledge” what do we know before we start reading? We started reading some Nonfiction texts and talked together what we already know about the topics. Then we read the books! This will help us as we prepare to pick an animal and do some research on it!

Math: We finished chapter 8 about measurement and time. The students did great learning how to read a clock to the hour and the half hour. The next unit is on 2D shapes!

Bible: We finished the life of Solomon and learned that even though he was so wise, he became very confident and stopped trusting in God. As a result he did lots of things God was not happy with. God finally said that he would take the kingdom away from Solomon. BUT God made a promise to David that his family will be king forever, so God said that he would allow only a small part of Israel to have Solomon’s family rule. This week we also learned that there are different kinds of Psalms and Proverbs. We sang out hearts out this week with a song that goes with our Bible verse, Psalm 8:1.

Science: We learned that everything is made up of matter. Matter comes in three states: solid, liquid, and gas. Solid are things like a table, a water-bottle, and our bones. Liquid are things like water, juice, and syrup. Gas are things like air, steam, and smoke.

On Monday, we debriefed about Kid City and also mailed our own postcard to our houses! Students came to me today to say they received it! That was fast!

Next Week:
Spelling Words: hops, hopping, stops, stopping, hopes, hoping, makes, making, smiles, smiling

Friday News for the Week of April 17-21

Happy Kid City Day!

Wow! Did your children have fun today? I hope they came back with lots of fun, exciting stories from Kid City today. They all did GREAT!!! And thank you to the parents who helped! We couldn't pull it off without you! Here’s some pictures!

This Week:
We focused on Kid City most of the week in dialogue and what to do at each station. We practiced with money and shopping at the store as well as how to visit the doctor and bank.

Math: We also learned how to tell time to the hour and half hour. This includes learning how to say, “Half past 9” for 9:30. It’s a little tricky but we’ll practice more!

Bible: We jumped back to the Old Testament with the story of Solomon. God said he would give anything to Solomon and guess what he asked for? Not money, not fame, not glory - he asked for wisdom! Wow! Because of that God gave him riches, fame, and glory! He was very wise as he lived and he also build the temple for the Lord. Our prayer is for wisdom like Solomon too!

WOW! Thank you SOOOO much for all of your lovely snacks, school supplies, cards, gifts, flowers and SO much more for Teacher Appreciation Week! I am so blessed to be able to be your child’s teacher. Thank YOU for raising such amazing children!! It is my pleasure to teach them!

This Week:
Reading: We worked on the strategy “Flipping the Sound.” This is a great strategy to read harder words. When you come to a word you don’t know, it’s a good idea to try the long and short sounds for the vowels to see if you can figure it out.
Writing: We started writing poetry this week! We learned that poems are fun to listen to and pretty to listen to. Poems are where you get to play with words. This week we wrote -ing poems and color poems. The students did great!

Spelling: This week we worked on “th” and “wh” words!

Math: We started our new unit on time and measurement. This week we learned about measuring, length, unit, short, and long. On Wednesday, we used cubes to measure things around the room.
Bible: This week we learned the Easter story, the story of Jesus’ last days on earth. Jesus entered Jerusalem, celebrated the Passover feast with his disciples, but then Judas, one of his own disciples betrayed Jesus and Jesus got arrested by the leaders. Jesus was then convicted to die even though he didn’t do anything wrong. He was told to carry a cross to the top of the hill and there he was crucified. Before that, Jesus was beat, kicked, spit on, and so much more worse things happened to him. After a few hours on the cross, he died there. Some of his friends put Jesus in an empty tomb and sealed the door with a big stone. 3 days later, his friends went to his tomb to find the stone rolled away and no Jesus inside! An angel told the friends, “Jesus is not here, he has risen! Just like he said!” Jesus was alive! Jesus appeared to his friends many times before he returned to heaven. Why did Jesus go through with dying even though he was God and he could have saved himself? Because, he loves each and everyone of us SO much, that he died in the place of our own sin. Thank you Jesus for dying for us! That’s why I love this time of Easter so much! If you’d like to go to an Easter service, here are some churches and some of their times:
