Friday News for the Week of September 25-29

We had a great field trip at Toguchi Beach today!

Here’s some pictures:

This week:
Reading - Our strategy was “Cross Checking.” That means to cross the pictures with the words to ask Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?” It’s a very important strategy for readers to be able to do! We read a few books and ended with Pete the Cat goes to the Beach - perfect for our field trip today!

Math: We finished up Chapter 1 which was all about addition strategies to 10. We learned how to make the sum of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. We even learned interesting things like true and false addition sentences, we learned how to read and understand addition number stories and so much more. The students rocked their math test today!

Writing: This week we thought of good opening sentences for our stories instead of always using “One day.” The students thought of some really good ones! We also learned that good writers spell their spelling words correctly and know how to make sentences instead of letting their stories go on with …. and…. and… and :)

Bible: We finished up the Bible unit about Abraham. It’s amazing to see how God kept his promises through Abraham’s life - by giving him a son and blessing the whole world through Abraham’s family.

Science - We finished up learning about our Solar System! We learned about each of the planets that go around the sun and the place we call our community! Next we’ll be zooming in a little bit to look at the earth we live on, our continent, our country, our city, and our neighborhood!

Next Week:

Spelling Words: in is it did big him rip fix was of
Bible Memory: “Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth.” Psalm 100:1

Upcoming Events:

  • 10/9: No school!
  • 11/3: Parent/Teacher Conferences - no classes  More information coming soon!
  • 11/11: Walkathon and Holiday Market
  • 11/13: OCSI holiday

Friday News for the Week of September 19-22

Happy Friday!

This Week:
Reading - We continued to build stamina for Read to Self and we managed to read for 20 minutes - 3 times this week! Great job everyone! Starting next few weeks, we will be reading to self everyday while I conference with individual students and groups of students.

This week we focused on Characters. We learned that they can be people, animals, or things. We read three books to see the different kinds of characters.

Writing - We focused the whole week on writing with a capital letter and period at the end. We used our hands to figure out when the sentence should end and we should write a period. We also charted out all the things good writers do that we should do!

Math: We learned how to add to the sums of 6, 7, 8, and 9. The students are fast in their math facts. We’ve been doing some center work in math time, playing some math games and working in our workbooks. The students are doing a good job of staying on task and working hard!

Bible - We are continuing to follow the story of Abraham and Sarah. God made a covenant with Abraham - that’s a fancy word for a promise between God and a man. He then changed his and Sarah’s names. He promised that their family would be a great nation and will be as many as the stars in the sky or the sand in the shore. God made a promise to them, but in the next story, they tried to take matters into their own hands and use Hagar, Sarah’s servant, to get a baby! God reminded them again in today’s story that they are going to have a son. Sarah laughed when she heard the news - but it goes to show, trust God’s timing in everything in your life!

Next Week:
Spelling Words: up  us  mud  bug  fun  run  sun  cut  to  are

Happy Friday!

We has another great week in 1st grade!

This Week:

Reading: We focused on Author and Illustrators. We learned that sometimes it can be two different people, or sometimes it is the same person. On Friday, the students got to listen to a very special book… a book I wrote when I was in 4th grade! I told them that they all can be authors and illustrators some day too!

We also learned that, “A sentence is a complete message that MUST start with a Capital letter and end with a period.” We will be working on sentences throughout the next few weeks.

We continued to build stamina for Read to Self. We made it to 18 minutes, but we all don’t quite have the stamina for 20 minutes yet. Next week!

We also learned about KidsA-Z which we will be doing during Listen to Reading time. I sent home the passwords for it on Tuesday. If your child would like to do it at home, they are welcome to! There is even an app for it on a ipad or iphone! Parents you can also register your email address to receive results to your inbox. Please email me if you have any questions about KidsA-Z!

This week we also had a sneak peak at Word Work. I gave the students macaroni and playdough and they spelled different words with the objects.

Writing: This week we learned that good writers:
  • Use the beginning and ending sounds to help them write words
  • Write stories about their lives
  • Use spaces
  • Draw pictures to match their story

At the end of writing, we also have “Author’s Chair” where the students get to share one of their stories with the class!

Math: We are zooming through Chapter 1! The students learned about adding 0, vertical addition, how to read a number story, and how to add to sums of 4 and 5. They are all doing great in math!

Bible: We are going through the book of Genesis and learning about how God keeps his promises through the stories of Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood, the Tower of Babel, and now with Abram and Sarai.

Science: We learned about Venus, Mars, Earth, Jupiter and Saturn!

Friday News for the Week of September 5-8

Happy Friday!

This week:

Reading: We continued to build stamina in Read to Self. We made it up to 15 minutes - twice! I think next week we’ll make it up to 20 minutes! We also focused on learning about Titles of a book. Titles are the name of the book. We learned that sometimes they are all capital letters, or just the first words are capital. Today we looked in our reading folder to see the titles of the books the students picked and we wrote them down.

Math: We started Chapter 1 with learning about addition number sentences. The students all did GREAT! I think we’ll have a super fun year with math!

Bible: We learned about Adam and Eve and what happened to them in the Garden of Eden. Everything was perfect, but Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the fruit from the tree that God told them not to eat. That is how sin entered the world. But God made a very amazing promise to Adam that someday he would send someone to save everyone - we know that person is Jesus!

Writing: We learned that good writers write from left to right, top to bottom, write about one idea, and underline the words they don’t know.

This week we went to the computer lab and learned how to play Spelling City games and ConnectED My Math game - Fact Dash

Science: We are learning about the Solar System!

Next Week:
Spelling Words: job, God, mom, hop, top, got, not, fox, a, and
Bible Memory Verse: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11

Friday News for the Week of August 28-September 1

Happy 2nd week of school

We are having a rocking time in 1st grade!

This week:

Reading - We started to build stamina in our Read to Self time. We started at 3 minutes, then the next day we went down to 2 minutes, but the next day we went up to 5, 8, and then 9 minutes by Friday! Our goal is 20 minutes!

We also learned a good system of picking our own books called IPICK. Students will be picking 6 books every week for their book basket to use while they Read to Self and Read with Someone. We learned that picking books is like picking shoes to wear. We wear them for different purposes and according to our likes and size.

Math - We took a beginning of the year math test that was pretty hard, but it will show me what I need to teach and focus on this year!

Writing - We started Writer's Workshop by practicing getting the writing folders and writing the whole time until I ring the bell. We also practiced writing our name and date on every writing paper. On Monday I had the students write WHATEVER they wanted to! This will be a baseline writing to compare with some writing they will do later in the year. I think they will be blown away by their improvement in writing!

Spelling - We reviewed all of the consonants this week and practiced writing in our spelling books.

Bible - We started with the beginning of the Bible in Genesis with the story of creation. We learned that God created everything in 6 days and on the 7th day he rested. We learned that his best creation was humans when he created Adam and Eve. God is so amazing for being our creator!

For Fun Friday, the students got to use their whiteboards to draw!

Next Week:
Monday - NO SCHOOL!

We will start HOMEWORK!

Spelling Words: am   at   cat  can   man   ran   had   has  I   the

Bible Memory Verse: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

Upcoming Events:
September 18th - No School for students
September 29th - Toguchi Field Trip for 1st and 2nd grade. More information to come later.

Have a wonderful weekend!
