Friday News for the Week of October 23-27

Happy Friday!

Today is the last day of 1st quarter! Wow - the time totally just flew by! Moms and dads - you’d be so impressed to see how your children have grown and learned only in 1 quarter!

Today we had a “Writing Celebration!” where we celebrated publishing a book and finishing a writing unit. We shared the party with 2.1 Ms. Guiles class and every student got to read their story to a 2nd grade partner. AND we got to eat snacks while we did it. :) Here’s some pics from the event:

Then they enjoyed Fun Friday with the 2nd graders!

Today in PE, we also had a very special, once a year, OBSTACLE course created by our amazing PE teacher Mr. Meredith. The students had a BLAST going through the obstacle course. Here’s some pictures and a timelapse of going through it:

Here’s a recap of what we did this week:

Reading: I taught the students two important accuracy strategies: Trade a word and guess a word that makes sense, and use the pictures to figure out the words. We also continued to focus on the characters and setting of the story. On Friday, the students picked a book and wrote down the characters and setting from that story.

Writing: We finished up the Small Moment Narrative unit of writing. Next week we’ll start writing “How to…” stories! Here’s all of their published stories as well as pictures of them peer editing:

Math: We continued traveling through subtraction. This week has one of the toughest lessons so far: Related Facts or Fact Family! It was quite a challenge for some students to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction, but we took an extra day to review it, and I think everyone understands it. Great job! Next week we’ll be finishing Chapter 2 with review and the test.

Bible: We are using our Joseph puppets to retell the story. After being sold as a slave and being put in jail, God was with Joseph the whole time and finally, Joseph was called from jail to interpret Pharaoh’s dream and given the second highest position in all of Egypt! Wow! I reminded the students that even if they are facing tough situations in their life, to not give up, because God will carry them through. That was a great reminder for me too!

Social Studies: We finished our unit called “Me on the Map” where the students learned about themselves in relation to Yomitan, Okinawa, Japan, Asia, and Earth!

Next Week:

Friday News for the Week of October 9-13

Happy Friday!

Here’s a recap of our fun week in 1st grade:

Reading: We focused the whole week on rhyming words! We read through several fun Dr. Seuss books and thought of the rhyming words we heard. Dr. Seuss books are so creative! I love reading them!

We also started our first full session of Daily 5. The students did Read to Self for 20 minutes everyday, and then they picked Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Book Shopping for the next 20 minutes. They are already becoming such good readers!

Writing: This week we looked at revising our work by going back and asking Who? What? When? Where? and Why? We learned that, “when you are done writing, you’ve just begun!” Just because you think you’re finished, doesn’t mean there are more details to add to our stories to make it longer and more exciting to read to our friends.

Math: We are zooming right through subtraction. Students have learned some vocabulary including “difference” and “minus sign” as well as worked in groups to play math games and learn how to draw a diagram (pictures) to help with the subtraction problems.

Today we went to the computer lab to play some Math games from the connectED website!

Bible: We continue to follow the story of Jacob. After he ran away from his home because he tricked his brother Jacob, he went back to his mother’s homeland. There he married Rachel and Leah, as well as 2 other ladies and his family grew. He has 12 sons. God blessed him in whatever he did and his flocks grew. Finally God told him to go back to Canaan, but one big problem - his brother Esau is there! Today we learned that Jacob trusted in God, went back home where Esau welcomed him back with open arms. God always keeps his promises and it’s so cool to see how he kept His word with Jacob and brought him back to Canaan and took care of him.

Bible Memory Verse: Every week will will study and learn a Bible verse - we will memorize it and hide it deep down into our heart. On Fridays I will start and oral test - where the students will have to say the Bible verse to me without looking at the paper. Please have your child practice the Bible verse every night as a part of their homework (it's on the homework checklist) . This month we are building on Psalm 100 - every week it gets longer!

To help, here a song to learn it faster!

Social Studies: We are learning all about our continent we live on - Asia! We learned that it has the most people on it and ranges from cold climates to warm climates. We learned about the highest mountain, and some of the biggest cities.

Operation Christmas Child - We are going to do a great thing together as a class! Together we are going to pack a shoe-box for a child in need around the world! On Thursday we talked about it and each child decided what they would like to include in the box. Friday News for the Week of October 2-6

Happy Friday!

We has another great week at OCSI!

This week:
Reading: We focused on some accuracy strategies to help us read hard words. We learned to read try to read the beginning and ending sound, and to stretch and blend the words. We also learned that sometimes it is better to skip the word and go back to try to read it again later. We also read a few Dr. Seuss books this week and we’ll continue reading some more next week!

This week we also learned how to do Read to Someone - the students love reading with a buddy so much! In the first day, they already read 14 minutes! Here are some pictures of them reading:

There was an odd number of students so even I got to do Read to Someone

Next we will start a rotation of Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Listen to Reading, and Book Shopping.

Math: We are diving into Chapter 2 which is all about subtraction. It’s a little bit of a mind shift from addition, but the students are doing great!

Writing: This week we officially started the new writing curriculum called Writer’s Workshop. It fit right into our other writing strategies. This week, we learned to write a story in a book format. We learned the three steps: 1. Idea, Plan, and Write. For Idea, it can be a small moment, like something that you do, or something that happened to you. For Plan, we need to touch each page and tell what we want to write, then quickly sketch the pictures across. We also read a fabulous story about a boy who never had any ideas during writing time, but then his class helped turn him into a great writer.

Bible: We are continuing through the story of Jacob and Esau. Even though Jacob was the younger of the twins - God has plans for him to receive the birthright and blessing - even if it was through tricking his brother. Now, Jacob is on the run from his family - but God’s going to keep looking out for Jacob and continue to keep his promise to Abraham and Isaac and now Jacob. Here are the students with their Bible puppets of Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and Esau.

Fun Friday: We PAINTED!!!!
