Friday News for the Week of Feb 19-23

This Week:

Reading - Our focus was the Mo Willems books Elephant and Piggy! The students had a blast interacting with those books. They all have such great morals for the kids to learn too! On Friday, the students wrote their own Elephant and Piggy story using the speech bubbles.

This week we also focused on adjectives. We looks at different kinds of adjectives including size, looks, tastes, smells, how many, color, and behavior.

Math: We took some Benchmark Tests this week over Chapters 1-5. the students remembered most of the things and it was great to see how much they have grown in math! We also started with Chapter 6 which is double digit addition!!

Bible: We learned how Israel rejected God as their king and asked for a person king to rule over them. God chose Saul for them and for a while Saul followed after God, but later he started to disobey him. As a result God tore the kingdom away from him and God will choose a new king to rule over Israel.

Friday News for the Week of Feb12-16

Happy Friday! We had another great week in 1st grade!

This week was a little different because on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, the students participated in Kids Club put on by the MS and HS students for their service week. The students learned how Jesus is the light by doing games, crafts, music, and a Bible story. They all had a blast!! And they got to get to know some of the MS and HS students!

Reading: We read all of the Mo Willems Pigeont books this week. They are so hilarious! We looked at similarities from all of the books. We learned the Mo does some of the same things as he draws the pigeons - called Author’s Craft. We even made our own Pigeon books AND made our own class video called, “Don’t let the pigeon be the teacher!” coming soon to the website…

Writing: We continued to write poetry this week with concrete poems!

Math: We finished Unit 5! Place value is a really hard concept but the students all got it and did well on their test today! Next unit:

Bible: We only did Bible twice this week in class and we learned about the cool story how the Philistines stole the Ark of the Covenant but when they placed it beside their idol Dagon, in the morning Dagon was on the floor and the next day Dagon’s arms and head fell off! The Philistines got scared and returned the Ark to the Israelites. How cool is that!!

Friday News for the Week of Feb 5-9

This Week:

Reading - We read all the books from Laura Numeroff and Julia Bond! We looked at the similariteis between eatch of the books and even looked at a separate book written by Laura called Gorillas Don’t Wear Glasses. Today we even wrote our own If you give a 1st grader a Book. It’s so much fun to study all about an author and illustrator! These books also help prepare for a good reading strategy called cause and effect which the students will learn more about in 2nd grade.

Math: This week the students met a special alligator named Ally who loves to eat big numbers - which is how we learned < (greater than ) > (less than) and = (equal to). The students were so quick to figure those out. It’s also a good skill for the students to know the vocabulary of more, less, greater, equal etc.

Writing: We are continuing to write fantastic poetry in 1st grade! This week we wrote Question Poems, the 5 W’s poems, and Acrostic poems. We are having so much fun I’m going to continue it for one more week!

Bible: We did a review of the Judges and the story of Ruth and Naomi and continued into the birth of Samuel and how Samuel was called by God. It’s so crazy to think that Samuel heard God’s voice. Though we would all love for God to speak directly to us, it’s reassuring to know that God still speaks through the Holy Spirit, through the Bible, and time spent with Him.

100 Days of School - On Thursday we celebrated being in school for 100 days! We counted to 100 by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's. We thought of some silly things like "I want 100____" or "If I had $100 I would..." We are 100 days smarter!

Next Week:

All week - Service week for MS and HS students. There will be no specials for elementary students. 1st and 2nd graders will be participating in Kids Club on Tuesday-Thursday from 12:40-2:50.

Friday News for the week of January 29- February 2

Happy Friday!

This Week:

Reading: Retelling - This is a hard one first graders, especially for students whom English is not a first language. This week we read several easy to follow stories then RETOLD it to a partner. When retelling, it’s a good idea to tell the characters, setting, what happened in the beginning, middle, and end. We practiced a lot this week and we will keep practicing! Please ask your children about what they are reading so they can RETELL it to you! :)

Math: We are cruising through place value! We learned how to figure out 10 more or 10 less. This week we also did a lesson on the US money of dimes and nickels. We played a fun game with play money where the students exchanged pennies to nickels and then to dimes. The students are all doing great and working hard.

Bible: This week we learned the neat story of Ruth. It’s amazing how God used a foreigner from Moab to be a part of Jesus’ family!

Writing - This week we started writing POEMS! So far we wrote color poems, I remember poems, and subject poems. The students are enjoying it and they are super creative! I’m excited to write more next week!
